Quick Tip for Families in Intensive Care: Seek External Advise and Never Give Up!
Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.
Over the last few weeks, we have been working with a family who had their loved one in and out of intensive care for many months. A couple of weeks ago they often were on the ward and he was deteriorating, he was malnourished and he also went into respiratory failure.
The ICU team initially didn’t want to take him back into ICU and they didn’t want to intubate him because they said it wouldn’t survive. Family was adamant that he needed ICU and eventually he went back into ICU intubated.
The ICU was adamant and still wanted to withdraw treatment. And the family went as far as going to the Supreme Court and let the Supreme Court decide. The Supreme Court decided in their favor and their loved one is now extubated and is on their way back to the ward.
Now, what does that tell you? It tells you never give up, let your gut tell you what is the right thing to do and seek external advice. We knew that this patient had a chance of survival. Right, and we supported the family all the way along and we gave them tips along the way what to do, what questions to ask and we help them advocate for their loved one.
So, the quick tip really is, never ever give up and listen to your gut because you know, what’s right for your loved one.
That’s my tip for today. Take care and I’ll talk to you in a few days.
