Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care!
Today, I had an email from a client and the client is asking who is saying that her mother has been in intensive care for two weeks now after pulmonary fibrosis that developed into ARDS or lung failure.
The doctors are telling the family that their Mother’s lungs are too stiff and they either do a tracheostomy on her or they let her pass away and basically talk about comfort care!
Now here is my tip for today! In a situation like that when it comes to pulmonary fibrosis and ARDS, have you asked whether ECMO is an option for your mother?
ECMO can be used for heart and for lung failure or ARDS/lung failure!
So unless you’ve asked that very question and unless they’ve given you an answer about that every other discussion needs to be stopped for now.
So my tip for today is ask for ECMO in case of ARDS or pulmonary fibrosis and then revisit your options. That’s my tip for today. This is Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com
