If you want to know what to do, how to get access to medical records when you have a family member, critically ill in intensive care, stay tuned. I’ve got news for you.
My name is Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com and I have another quick tip for families in intensive care for you.
So, one thing that we see over and over again is the following scenario, families in intensive care are unable to obtain access to medical records for their loved one even though they are the next of kin, they’re the guardian. ICUs are making it difficult even though they have the right to it.
It makes you wonder, what is it that hospitals have to hide? What is it that hospitals are worried about that you can’t see? That should make you suspicious right from the get-go. It just shows that they have things to hide because otherwise they would just make it transparent and health care must be transparent.
So, but here is a pro tip. 9 times out of 10, if you are coming to us and asking, “Hey, how do I get access to the medical records?” My first question to you is have they asked you to give consent to a procedure? I.e., intubation, central line insertion, catheter insertion, consent to give blood transfusions, consent to give certain medications, and the list goes on.
Now, how can you make an informed decision if you don’t have access to the medical records? So, your approach with intensive care team is, “Well, if you want me to make any further decisions, if you want me to give consent to procedures, treatment, et cetera, you need to have access to the medical records works most of the time.” Because healthcare has to be transparent, especially when it comes to treatment decisions, and so forth. Makes perfect sense and it works 9 times out of 10.
Just approach it from that angle because you call them out on that bullshit, excuse my language, you call them out on that bullshit by not giving you access to the medical records on the one hand, but on the other hand, they want you to make major decisions and give consent. Very simple.
So, that is my quick tip for today.
I have worked in critical care nursing for 25 years in three different countries where I worked as a nurse manager for over 5 years. I’ve been consulting and advocating for families in intensive care since 2013 here at intensivecarehotline.com.
I can confidently, confidently say that we have saved many lives for our clients and their loved ones in intensive care. You can verify that on our testimonial section at intensivecarehotline.com and you can verify it on our intensivecarehotline.com podcast section where we have done client interviews.
Now, that’s why we have helped hundreds of members and clients over the years here at intensivecarehotline.com with their loved ones in intensive care, making sure they make informed decisions, have peace of mind, control, power, influence, making sure their loved ones get best care and treatment always.
That’s also why we created a membership for families of critically ill patients in intensive care. You could become a member if you go to intensivecarehotline.com if you click on the membership link or if you go to intensivecaresupport.org directly. In the membership, you have access to me and my team, 24 hours a day, in the membership area and via email and we answer all questions intensive care related.
In the membership, you also have exclusive access to 21 e-books and 21 videos that I’ve personally written and recorded. All of that, the access to those resources will help you to make informed decisions, have peace of mind, control, power, and influence, making sure your loved one gets best care and treatment always.
I also do one-on-one consulting and advocacy over the phone, Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, whichever medium works best for you. I talk to you and your families directly. I handhold you through this once in a lifetime situation that you simply can’t afford to get wrong. I also talk to doctors and nurses directly. When I talk to doctors and nurses directly with you or on your behalf, I ask all the questions that you haven’t even considered asking but must be asked when you have a loved one critically in intensive care because I speak the medical language and whatever they say, I have counter questions because I understand intensive care inside out. I also represent you in family meetings with intensive care teams.
We also do medical record reviews in real time, and we also do medical record reviews after intensive care if you have unanswered questions, if you need closure, or if you are suspecting medical negligence. When we do medical record reviews in real time, it is that you can get a second opinion in real time.
All of that, you get at intensivecarehotline.com. Call us on one of the numbers on the top of our website or simply send us an email to [email protected] with your questions.
If you like my videos, subscribe to my YouTube channel for regular updates for families in intensive care, click the like button, click the notification bell, share the video with your friends and families and comment below what you want to see next, what questions and insights you have.
