Quick Tip for Families in Intensive Care: My Dad’s Been in ICU 3 Months & Slow Respiratory Wean Off the Ventilator & Tracheostomy, Can He Go Home?

Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.

So today, I want to answer another question from one of our members for families of critically ill patients in intensive care. We actually have a membership, that you can join as well. I will tell you in a minute how you can get access to our membership for families of critically ill patients in intensive care.

So, let’s read out a question from one of our members who says, “Thinking ahead, have there been any developments regarding weaning off a ventilator at home? These ICUs are not great places and are hurting my dad so badly. If there’s any way to wean off the ventilator at home, we are willing to try.” Well, that’s a great question and it ties right in with our service provision.

So, some of you might have heard that we are also providing a service Intensive Care at Home. So really, there’s no need for a slow respiratory wean in ICU because it’s not a good place for patients to be long-term. In this particular situation, our member’s dad has been in ICU for I think three months now and they still can’t wean him off the ventilator and the tracheostomy. The better and more conducive place for him is definitely a home care option.

So, with Intensive Care at Home, you can find more information at intensivecareathome.com. We pretty much send intensive care nurses into the home to facilitate long-term intensive care patients going home and improving their quality of life and in some instances, their quality of end of life at home instead of a long term stay in intensive care and that includes long term weaning.

So, currently with Intensive Care at Home, we are operating all around Australia in all major capital cities but also in rural and regional areas. We are NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), TAC (Transport Accident Commission), iCare, NIISQ (National Injury Insurance Scheme in Queensland), DVA (Department of Veteran Affairs) approved service provider, but we also have received funding through departments of health and public hospitals as well. So, you can contact us one way or another at intensivecareathome.com. So really, there is an option for your dad to go home and have weaning at home. We have successfully weaned patients off the ventilator and tracheostomy at home.
