Quick Tip for Families in Intensive Care: Cost & Process of Independent Medical Records Review That Might End Up Being Used in Court Litigation

Today, I have an email from Anna who asks,

“Hi Patrik,

There are two things I’m looking for assistance with at the moment.

1. Independent private medical assessment that may help either disprove that discharge would be safe, and/or that my father still requires an acute level of ICU Care, which requires ICU care in the hospital and,

2. Cost and process of an independent medical record review that might end up being used in court litigation.”

Well Anna, the good news is we can help with both of them, we have done both. We do mainly nursing assessments, but they are definitely independent. We have proven with our nursing assessment many times that discharge is not safe or needs to happen in a certain way or can’t happen to a certain facility.

We also look at home care nursing assessments. You don’t always need a medical assessment. We can prove pretty quickly with the nursing assessment with our legal nurse consultants that all have decades of critical care and nursing experience. We can verify there that a discharge can’t happen or it’s unsafe. We can do that very quickly, and it’s much more cost-effective than a medical assessment.

Now, the cost of any of those assessments, it really depends on the volume of the notes we need to look at. There’s a difference if we look at 100 pages of medical records in ICU or if we look at 10,000 pages of ICU medical records. So, it’s fair to say that the more pages we need to look at, sort of the lower the hourly rate because it sort of comes in bulk, but we would need to look at it at the volume and we also would need to look at what questions you want answered.
