Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.
Today’s tip is about family meetings in intensive care.
Now many families in intensive care come to us and they say to us, “look we’ve been asked to attend a family meeting tomorrow at three o’clock.”
Now my first response to this, is do not go to a family meeting unless you have the meeting agenda in writing.
So why is that?
Because family meetings in intensive care are used from the Intensive Care team to get what they want. So the family meeting is actually an intensive care meeting that is used to push the ICU team’s agenda and not yours.
It’s being used for the Intensive Care team to push their agenda.
So if you are not prepared for a family meeting with the Intensive care team, I can assure you you will get walked all over and you should not go until you’ve spoken to us beforehand, because we can help you to prepare for a family meeting. We can even be there either in person or over the phone for a family meeting, so that you have strong advocacy!
Nine times out of ten a family meeting is being used to deliver bad news. So you need to be prepared for that!
So my tip for today, don’t go into family meeting unless you are prepared for this.
You have the meeting agenda in front of you and unless you have spoken to us before, don’t go, because we can help you during a family meeting and before a family meeting.
Take care. I’ll be back with another quick tip in a few days.
