In this week’s BLOG I want to share with you
”5 CONFRONTING QUESTIONS YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF IF YOUR LOVED ONE IS CRITICALLY ILL IN INTENSIVE CARE!”
Before I get into today’s topic I want to share a quote that I wrote on today’s topic and the quote says
“Being uncomfortable and getting outside of your comfort zone is essential when having a loved one critically ill in Intensive Care.
Sitting passively at the sidelines and watch events go by like 99% of families of critically ill Patients in Intensive Care do, will get you nowhere and you’ll never get what you want!
Getting outside of your comfort zone, challenging your and the Intensive Care team’s assumptions is the quickest way to PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence and it’ll distinguish you and your family very quickly from the 99% of families in Intensive Care who chose to be victims of circumstances!
Asking confronting and uncomfortable questions requires you getting outside of your comfort zone and face harsh and uncomfortable truths, however it’ll ultimately lead you to freedom, PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence!”
If your loved one is critically ill in Intensive Care and you quickly want to get to the bottom of things, it’s best to look reality in the eye and scrap all the BS!
It’s very important that you and your family see the Intensive Care environment and the critical illness of your loved one for what it is. Don’t see it for any better than it is and don’t see it for any worse than it is.
Don’t be a victim of circumstances, be a master of your own destiny instead!
And if you are like 99% of families of critically ill Patients in Intensive Care who have no PEACE OF MIND, no control, no power and no influence, you just watch events go by and you passively sit at the sidelines and you’ll be a victim of circumstances, rather than a master of your own destiny!
Having the courage and determination to do your own research when your loved one is critically ill in Intensive Care is essential to get PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence quickly!
Not having the courage and determination to do your own research when your loved one is critically ill in Intensive Care will lead you nowhere and you’ll never be the master of your own destiny!
In order to master the challenges at hand when your loved one is critically ill in Intensive Care and is either
- very unstable and in a very critical condition
you and your family need to start asking some very confronting and uncomfortable questions in order to find out what’s really happening with your critically ill loved one, who’s facing one of the aforementioned challenging and often heartbreaking situations!
And I can assure you that after more than 15 years Intensive Care nursing in three different countries, where I have also worked as a nurse unit manager for more than 5 years, I have seen over and over again that only the families who were willing to ask themselves uncomfortable and even confronting questions were able to scrap all the BS, get to the bottom of things quickly and in the process get PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence!

Getting to PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence with the least amount of friction
In order to get there quickly and with the least amount of friction, I have found that the most successful families who had the biggest level of control, power, influence and PEACE OF MIND were able to quickly get to the bottom of things and scrap all the BS by asking the following 5 confronting questions!
- Is the diagnosis and the prognosis of my critically ill loved one real or is it a “doom and gloom” picture the Intensive Care team is painting?
Intensive Care teams tend to be very quick at painting “doom and gloom” pictures and they tend to be quick at pointing out the negatives rather than the positives! They do this for a number of reasons, including to keep you and your family at “arms length” as well as wanting to protect their professional reputation in case things don’t go as planned!
Remember, I’m not talking about a “straight forward” and “soft” admission to Intensive Care, I am talking about some of the biggest challenges your critically ill loved one can face when being admitted to Intensive Care such as them being
- very unstable and in a very critical condition
By you doing your own research and by you very quickly finding out what the true nature of the situation is, you are already one step ahead of other families in Intensive Care who will never see the light of the day, so to speak!
Your job is to question, question, question, question!!!
You need to stop worrying about what the Intensive Care team thinks about you and your family and you need to turn the tables into your favour by asking distinct and confronting questions!
- What is happening “BEHIND THE SCENES” in Intensive Care that I don’t know, but that’s directly impacting on the care and treatment that my critically ill loved one is receiving or not receiving?
Families of critically ill Patients in Intensive Care who have a good handle on things and get PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence quickly, never shy away from confronting the Intensive Care team about their “hidden agendas” and the stuff that’s going on “BEHIND THE SCENES” in Intensive Care!
The fact of the matter is that if you don’t know and if you don’t understand that Intensive Care is a highly political, hierarchical, dynamic and volatile environment you have missed the boat already!
If you don’t understand that Intensive Care is full of intrigue because of all the politics and because of the constant competition for promotions and the constant fight for limited resources, you will never have PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence!
If you don’t get this, you might as well stop reading now and go back to the 99% of families of critically ill Patients in Intensive Care who will never have any PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence!
Families in Intensive Care who have PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence and usually get what they want are not afraid, nor are they intimidated by the “perceived power” and “perceived authority” of the Intensive Care team and they challenge them on every level.
Remember, you don’t need to be a doctor or a nurse in order to have PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence when your loved one is critically ill in Intensive Care, but you need to be courageous and you need to be able to ask yourself and the Intensive Care team confronting and uncomfortable questions in order to get to the bottom of things very quickly!
Recommended resources:
- Is the Intensive Care team prepared “to do whatever it takes” to get my critically ill loved one out of Intensive Care alive or are they reluctant to invest the financial($$$), human and emotional resources to get the desired outcome?
Whenever “shit hits the fan” so to speak and your critically ill loved one is in a really difficult and heartbreaking situation in Intensive Care, you and your family really need to get to the bottom of things very quickly, by throwing out all of your preconceived notions and preconceived ideas about Intensive Care!
You really need to start gauging the Intensive Care team by challenging them whenever they give you the “doom and gloom” speech.
Whenever the Intensive Care team gives you the “doom and gloom” speech and the negative talk, you and your family need to very carefully listen to what is being said and what is not being said.
The fact of the matter is that whenever your critically ill loved one is either
- very unstable and in a very critical condition
the Intensive Care is playing their game and the wheels that are in motion when the stakes are very high, go way beyond your critically ill loved one’s prognosis and diagnosis.

The Intensive Care team knows that in the aforementioned challenging and heartbreaking situations, the financial, the human and the emotional resources required to get your critically ill loved one out of Intensive Care alive can be enormous and the people in charge of the resources in Intensive Care often simply don’t want to spend the time, the money and the emotions that are required to get the best possible outcome for your loved one!
It’s often easier for the Intensive Care team to suggest that a “withdrawal of treatment” or a “limitation of treatment” is in the “best interest” of your critically ill loved one!
Your job is to question the Intensive Care team and also question yourself in order to make sure that “what you see is what you get”!
Recommended resources:
- Am I making mistakes that hold me back from PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence?
You’ve heard me saying it before! 99% of families of critically ill Patients in Intensive Care have no PEACE OF MIND, no control, no power and no influence!
They are totally blind to everything that’s happening around them. They trust the Intensive Care team blindly without doing their own research! They mistakenly buy into the “perceived power” and the “perceived authority” of the Intensive Care team!
That’s a big mistake and I hope you and your family don’t make the same mistakes!
I hope that you and your family are different and here I give you the tools for being different!
Most families in Intensive Care are making the same mistakes over and over again, only to find that the Intensive Care team has the upper hand, leaving you without PEACE OF MIND, control, power and influence!
Most families of critically ill Patients in Intensive Care stay passive and they simply don’t ask for what they want and they don’t ask for the very best!
Or even worse, they don’t know what to ask…
Recommended resources:
- Is the Intensive Care team more interested in treating other critically ill Patients instead of my critically ill loved one? Are other critically ill Patients in Intensive Care seen as a higher priority than my critically ill loved one?
Again, the Intensive Care team tends to have interests that go way beyond your critically ill loved one’s care and treatment!
It goes back to Intensive Care being such a highly political, hierarchical, volatile and dynamic environment!
The Intensive Care team has high priorities and let’s face it, your critically ill loved one may not be one of their highest priorities!
Whether they don’t see your critically ill loved one as not financially viable, whether they are worried that if your critically ill loved one is going to occupy a bed in Intensive Care that could be used for another, more interesting and more financially viable Patient or whether other families in Intensive Care simply have a competitive edge above you, because they are simply asking the right questions and they demand more than you do, you just don’t know.
The fact of the matter is that whatever the Intensive Care team is telling you, it may or it may not be true!
Again you need to get to the bottom of things very quickly and you need to ask all the difficult, confronting and uncomfortable questions very quickly in order to get to the bottom of things!
